Smartmooring – reliability and energy efficiency by embedded sensing

The Smartmooring project develops sensor-equipped mooring components for marine energy systems. The in-situ sensors will enable data-driven design optimizations, predictive maintenance, and in-operation optimization of energy yield.

About Ocean Energy

Ocean energy captures the power of the world’s oceans, an immense renewable resource. Ocean energy technologies offer a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, contributing to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and helping to combat climate change.

Wave energy systems convert the energy of surface waves into electricity and tidal energy harnesses the predictable movements of tidal currents.

The marine environment poses unique challenges, requiring robust and resilient technology to withstand the forces of nature.

Many ocean energy systems are moored to the seabed, via mooring components that often form an integral and critical part of the total system.

About Fiber Optic Sensing

Fiber optic sensing is a mature technology sector with applications in most industrial sectors.

Utilizing the optical fiber and its unique properties, it is possible to develop fiber optic sensors to provide data on e.g. strain, temperature, pressure, movement, electrical current, chemistry, and more. The fiber optic sensors can also often be embedded with a minimally invasive footprint.

Sensor-equipped mooring components

By embedding fiber optic sensors into mooring lines and other components, this project aims to gather (close to) real-time data on strain, temperature, and shape of mooring components.

The sensors enables data driven design optimizations, predictive maintenance strategies, and adjustments of operation parameters to maximize energy output.

The Smartmooring project is a collaboration between Calsens, CorPower Ocean, Minesto, RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, University Gustave Eiffel, and the Universitat Politécnica de València.

The project has been awarded funding within the Clean Energy Transition Partnership (CETP) program.
